Not only has South Africa released permits for the hunting of the critically endangered black rhinos but also for leopards and elephants.
Since 2019 South Africa has recorded a general 24% decline in Rhino poaching. Although poaching on private properties has increased.
The man was caught at OR Tambo International Airport and tried to smuggle the rhino horns disguised as chocolate to China.
After smuggling over 50 pieces of rhino horns into Vietnam, the suspect is now paying with the most jail time ever given for wildlife related crimes.
After 30 rhino horns were found, police investigated and found that one of their own officers were involved in the illegal act.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment hopes that the hefty sentence given to three poachers will create awareness for World Rhino Day.
