On Wednesday 27 April, Ramokone Linah and her partner were fishing at Mogol river in Lephalale when all of a sudden shots were fired at them from a Limpopo farmer. Linah suffered from a gunshot wound while her partner managed to hide and call for help.
Limpopo farmer found with multiple fire weapons
As reported by JacarandaFM, when police arrived they found two rifles, a revolver, a pistol and two airguns in the possession of Paul Hendrik van Zyl – the owner of the farm where the incident took place.
And according to police spokesperson Mamphaswa Seabi, the 77-year-old farmer claims he mistook the couple for a hippopotamus and started shooting.
“During the incident, a 38-year-old woman sustained a gun wound and while her partner managed to hide, he immediately informed the police and emergency services. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.”
Charged with attempted murder
Hendriks was arrested and is now facing attempted murder charges.
And on Thursday 28 April, he appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court where he was granted R1 000 bail.
His case was further postponed to 18 May for further investigations to be made.
This case has already gotten negative publicity, especially from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters who started protesting outside the court on Thursday morning.
The political party claims that the shots were fired out of racism since the farmer is a white man and the victim a black woman.
