An unidentified Mpumalanga MEC has been arrested in connection with a double homicide and attempted murder, according to reports.
Mpumalanga MEC arrested for murder: Here’s what we know
As reported by SABC News, the high-ranking African National Congress (ANC) member was nabbed on Monday morning and while details are sketchy at this stage, it’s believed the matter is in connection with a number of deaths.
The unidentified MEC is expected to appear in court on Tuesday on murder charges.
More details around the case are expected to surface as new updates trickle in. However, according to reports, the high-ranking ANC official handed himself over to authorities accompanied by a lawyer.
Furthermore, as reported by News24, insiders at the Nelspruit police station have linked the arrest to a double homicide that occurred in August.
on Sunday 22 August, three men in a Volkswagen Polo were ambushed by armed gunmen after they’d reported a similar encounter earlier that fateful day, in Mbombela, Mpumalanga.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the three victims were allegedly targeted by shooters at approximately 19:30. After surviving the encounter, the victims opened a case at a nearby police station but, unfortunately, two of them would meet their end less than two hours later.
The third victim suffered severe injuries but lived to recall the horrific encounter. Two suspects linked to the shooting were arrested and are currently out on R20 000 bail each, Colonel Mdhluli.
The arrest of the Mpumalanga MEC is said to be linked to this double murder.
This is a developing story.
