As the cold front moves in for the weekend South Africans can expect especially cold and rainy conditions, with heavy rainfall and particularly low temperatures resulting in some snow predicted for the central and south-eastern parts of the country.
As a result, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has released a weather warning for expected flooding as well as some snow.
The areas of the country that will be most affected include:
- Eastern parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape
- Free State
- North-West
- Gauteng
- KwaZulu-Natal
- Highveld region of Mpumalanga
Expected Disruptions
The media statement warns the agricultural sector of possible losses due to localised flooding. Additionally, it points out the possibility of damage to both formal and informal infrastructure. As well as disruptions in traffic caused by dangerous road conditions. Any low lying areas will be especially susceptible to flooding.
Furthermore, the public is to expect disruptions to beachfront activities as well as possible damage to coastal infrastructure, particularly between Port Alfred and Sodwana Bay.
Snowfall Predicted
SAWS predicts that the cold conditions will move over the southern and south-eastern interiors of the country on Friday. Spreading to the central and eastern interior by Saturday before eventually exiting the south-eastern coastline of South Africa by Tuesday.
These cold weather movements are predicted to result in light snow over the eastern and southern parts of Lesotho on both Saturday and Sunday.
Instructions
The weather alert advises members of the public to stay clear of flowing water, emphasising that individuals should avoid any water that is more than ankle-deep. Moreover, rivers and swollen streams should not be crossed. While travelling in a vehicle remain cautious, and should you find yourself trapped, abandon the vehicle as soon as possible. SAWS also recommends moving to higher ground if rising floodwaters threaten one’s safety in any way.
