Earlier this morning the South African Weather Services (SAWS) released a level 2 alert for rain expected across the Eastern Cape on Saturday 23 April. It expects the worst of the downpour to start at 11:00 am and continue until midnight of the same day.
Expected Disruptions
In the alert, SAWS warns Eastern Cape residents to expect the rain to result in localised flooding of low lying areas. This includes roads, bridges and both informal and formal settlements. The possible flooding may result in damage to infrastructure and property. Additionally, traffic disruptions and delays are likely.
Instruction
The weather alert has advised the public to remain indoors and take the necessary steps to secure property and belongings. Should anyone need to commute, SAWS urges that flood areas are avoided. Individuals should steer clear of any stream and rivers whether driving or walking.
Other Warnings for Today
On Friday 22 April, SAWS also released two other weather warnings for today 23 April. Firstly, it issued an alert for level 2 disruptive rain scheduled for the northeastern areas of the Western Cape Province. Both flood damage and traffic disruptions can be expected. The alert urges the public to stay indoors and avoid flooded areas.
Additionally, SAWS warned the public of level 1 damaging waves along the west coast. It states that navigation at sea would be difficult with increased chances of water being taken on by small vessels in particular. SAWS warns the public to avoid the coastline and be aware of strong winds and large infrequent waves.
