Two people were shot and killed, and four others were wounded in another tavern shooting in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, over the weekend.
It is alleged that four unknown gunmen entered the Mputlane Inn tavern on Friday night and fired shots in the direction of the snooker table where someone was playing snooker.
“It is reported that four men, of which one of them was armed with a 9mm pistol, entered the tavern and started shooting randomly at patrons,” Colonel Dimakatso Sello, Gauteng police spokesperson said.
Sello said two people died on the scene and four others were rushed to hospital. The police are investigating two cases of murder and four of attempted murder.
Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela said the motive for the shooting was robbery. Mawela said: “Upon further investigations, we now know that the motive for the shooting was robbery. We are yet to make arrests.”
Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko said the incident happened in Friday evening. Speaking from Orlando East, where 15 people were shot dead in another tavern murder incident, she said she received information of a similar incident in Katlehong.
“People were playing snooker and gunmen just walked in. We took it upon ourselves to remain calm and to assist the police in bringing the perpetrators to book. Each time we see suspicious things happening in our communities, let us not keep quiet and just make sure you raise the alarm, and you inform the community policing forum in order to get assistance.”
