On Monday, 6 December, the City of Tshwane recorded 20 425 active cases. This is a massive increase compared to the previous week when there were only 6 697 active cases.
And on Monday alone, 2 560 new Covid-19 cases were recorded.
Tshwane is the epicentre of the new variant
According to the South African Medical Association (SAMA), the City of Tshwane is the epicentre of the new Omicron variant. And the city’s mayor, Randall Williams, spoke out about how the huge increase in active cases indicates that the current wave is spreading very rapidly.
“I want to appeal to our residents to be cautious and to continue practising social distancing, wearing masks and sanitising regularly.
Residents are encouraged to go out and get vaccinated. The City of Tshwane has 67 public vaccination sites,” says Williams.
Vaccination teams attacked in the city
Thus far, 1 639 960 vaccines have been administered in Tshwane, with 941 815 fully vaccinated people in the capital region.
And from the full amount of active cases, the recoveries are at 257 303.
However, following a recent attack on vaccination teams, Williams is asking for any information.
“I would also like to denounce the criminal attacks over the weekend that targeted our vaccination team in Soshanguve. If anyone has any information on the individuals that robbed our teams of our equipment, please come forward.”
