Positive cases continue to rise while Covid deaths remain stable
Even though there has been a rapid increase of new Covid-19 cases over the last few weeks in South Africa, the number of reported deaths has, fortunately, remained low for now.
Two sublineages of the Omicron variant have been spreading over the last few weeks in the country. And on Saturday 7 May, a new record was reached when the positivity rate raised above 30% for the first time in nearly five months.
According to health and social security expert Professor Alex van den Heever, South Africa won’t reach the point where lockdown restrictions would need to be reintroduced.
South Africa to expect a big change in fuel for 2023
BusinessTech has reported that South Africa’s government is “on track” with lowering the sulfur content in diesel fuel. This will mean that some oil refineries will eventually have to upgrade in order to meet the standards.
The changes are scheduled to come into effect in September 2023 and aim to then have diesel fuel that does not exceed 10 parts per million (10ppm).
Currently, the majority of the country’s diesel consumption comes from the higher 50ppm grade. And when the new idea was first presented in 2018, it was said that the 10ppm production “may present a severe challenge”.
