Illicit tobacco sales deprive the fiscus of R19 billion a year
The British American Tobacco South Africa (Batsa) has recently discovered that South Africa’s retail market is flooded with illicit tobacco.
And despite the government lifting the ban on tobacco sales in August 2020, the illegal trade has still been growing intensely. And according to the general manager of Batsa, illicit tobacco sales are currently depriving the fiscus of more than R19 billion a year.
Greyhound to return in April
The Greyhound group was forced to shut down in South Africa after the pandemic led to travel restrictions. However, after one year of shutting down, Greyhound is set to return on 13 April.
After being put up for auction by KAP Industrial, a new private investment entity bought the company, however, it has not yet been publically named.
Furthermore, the relaunch of the bus service is expected to create hundreds of jobs and hopefully boost the tourism sector.
SASSA R350 Grant: Here is when beneficiaries can collect APRIL payments
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the dates approved applicants are able to collect their payments for the R350 social relief of distress (SRD).
And since April 4 to April 7 is reserved for payments of old age, disability and child grants, the SRD payments will continue from April 8.
