State of Disaster to last for three months
According to Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the newly re-implemented national state of disaster will be in place for a period of three months.
The government hope that within these three months, most of those who have been impacted by the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have been assisted. The government will also be focusing on rebuilding programmes and responding to the most affected areas.
“The declaration of a national disaster also strengthens the commitment of National Government departments to fulfil its role in providing relief, recovery and rehabilitation to affected communities,” Dlamini-Zuma said.
Many pupils are failing due to Covid-19
No-fee and former Model-C schools have been experiencing gaps in attendance and are blaming it on Covid-19 disruptions over the last few years. These disruptions have resulted in new grade 8 learners having trouble adjusting to high school.
At Masan Secondary School in Mpumalanga, 435 of 509 students have failed the first quarterly tests. And 300 of 418 students at Pakamani Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape also failed.
According to the Education Department and education experts, warnings have been given that the pandemic and new school schedule would definitely have many negative long-term effects on students.
