Authorities on high alert after Cosatu’s disastrous rally
As part of 1 May’s Workers’ Day celebration, President Cyril Ramaphosa was meant to speak at Cosatu’s rally in the North West.
However, the rally was soon cut short when aggrieved workers refused to let Ramaphosa speak and instead started storming the stage at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, News24 reported.
The Sibanye-Stillwater gold mine workers have been on strike for three months after the mine rejected their demand of an R1 000 annual salary increase.
Since the interruption, authorities in North West have been on high alert and EWN has reported that no damage was caused during the unrest.
“This disruption led to the event ultimately being called off. The situation is currently stable with no reports of injuries, loss of lives or damage to property,” North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said.
Parts of Cape Town will experience power cuts this week
The City of Cape Town has announced that it will be doing “necessary routine maintenance” on its electrical infrastructure during the course of the week.
