Independent agency to manage KZN relief fund to avoid corruption
In an attempt to avoid corruption, the government is considering appointing an independent agency to manage the disaster relief funds set for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) after the devastating floods.
R1 billion has been identified by the National Treasury as “contingency reserve funds”. The funds can reportedly be released immediately to assist thousands of families that were affected by the floods.
According to Finance minister Enoch Godongwana, the independent agency could be appointed either through an existing agency or by establishing another Solidarity Fund.
“We are looking at whether we can’t appoint an independent agency as project manager. The experience of the Solidarity Fund is an important one; it delivered efficiency and could account for every cent,” he said.
Loadshedding implemented until 20 April
On Easter Sunday 17 April, Eskom announced that Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented until Wednesday 20 April.
It was also warned that if the system stays under pressure, loadshedding could be increased to tighter stages.
