Comair’s flights remain suspended by Sacaa
Despite Comair’s “best efforts”, the company confirmed on Wednesday that, for now, their flights will remain suspended by the SA Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa).
Both Kulula and British Airways falls under the operation of Comair. And according to the company, it will require further funding in order to “continue its operations on a sustainable basis”.
And in a report published at the end of January, it was revealed that the company lost approximately R100 million in “previously booked but unflown revenue”. And due to the Covid-19 Omicron variant and the international travel bans, revenue was hurt.
Covid commentator explains state of diaster extension
According to one of the leading voices in South Africa with regards to Covid-19, Professor Salim Abdool Karim, explains that even though the worst of the pandemic is over, public health measures still need to be effectively managed in case the situation changes.
And despite various calls from society sectors to drop the state of disaster, Karim stresses the importance of still managing Covid-19 and especially indoor mass gatherings.
Some analysts expect that the state of disaster will be extended further than 15 April since there is not enough time for replacement regulations to go through the necessary consultation and approval processes.
SARS is not backing down
The South African Revenue Service has been taking catching and prosecuting tax dodgers more seriously during the last year. And most of their cases involve non-compliant individuals, importers, exporters and cigarette producers.
It seems that SARS has been so successful in its campaign that people are complaining that the service is “overzealous”.
“The institution is on a mission to rid the country of corruption, one non-compliant taxpayer at a time,” says Jashwin Baijoo, legal manager at Tax Consulting SA.
