SONA 2022 – Ramaphosa underfire for unfulfilled promises
South Africa is waiting in great anticipation as preparations are well underway for SONA 2022. And as past SONAs are looked at since President Ramaphosa has been in charge, a string of unfulfilled promises was unveiled.
Since 2018, Rampahosa has largely failed to deliver on his SONA promises. This includes “building more houses and clinics, reducing the cost of living, and creating jobs”.
And in later addresses, Ramaphosa focused on the economy and job creation. He even promised a turnaround in jobs and “reviving and rebuilding the economy” with his 2021 SONA. And for the 2022 SONA, many South Africans are expecting to hear the same old tune.
South Africa’s Vodacom Please Call Me drama continues
The Pretoria High Court has turned Vodocom’s offer down as compensation to Nikosana Makate for his invention of the Please Call Me system.
Vodacom came to the table with an offer of R47 million after the Constitutional Court ordered the service company to negotiate “appropriate compensation for the invention in good faith”. However, Makate rejected the offer and found it “well below his due”. It seems according to Makate, he should be getting no less than R20 billion.
In conclusion, the High Court has ruled that Makate receives 5% of the total voice revenue generated from the PCM product over 20 years – from March 2001 to March 2021.
The call for the removal of Dali Mpofu grows
The Pretoria Society of Advocates is calling for the removal of advocate Dali Mpofu from the Judicial Service Commission. The General Council of the Bar (GCB) seconds this request as they revealed that Mpofu “brought the advocates’ profession and the administration of justice into disrepute“.
The call for Mpofu’s removal is due to his conduct during the JSC’s interview process for the next chief justice of South Africa. Mpofu and EFF reader, Julius Malema, blindsided candidates with “unfounded allegations and insults“. And with no evidence regarding the claims, Mpofu and Malema have been accused of character assassination and muddying the JSC process.
