New Cannabis industrial sector to be established
Since the proposed changes to South Africa’s cannabis laws have been tabled in parliament, for now, the government is enabled to push ahead with its plan to establish a new sector. The sector is alleged to be valued at R28 billion a year.
And if all goes to plan, the Cannabis for Private Purposes bill’s amendments should be passed by lawmakers by the end of April.
This comes after the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa in the latest SONA that the government was ready to push toward the legalisation and regulation of the commercial cannabis industry. They especially want to focus on this sector because of the possible 130 000 jobs that can be created.
The current backlog of driving licence renewals in South Africa are insane
Hundreds of thousands of motorists are still without a valid driving licence card, and with the grace period for the renewal of licences expiring at the end of March, things arent’ looking good.
According to the minister of transport, the current backlog of driving licence renewals are at 534 807 as of 25 February.
And so the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) has requested that this grace period be extended and that regulations that cover all driving licence cards be adjusted. The organisation wants to extend the renewal dates to 10 years.
According to the group, failing to do so would lead to an even larger backlog.
Russia fuel imports banned by Joe Biden
On Tuesday the 8th of March, both the United States and The United Kingdom announced the suspension of energy product imports from Russia. Shortly after the announcement oil prices increased, with Brent Crude oil increasing to $132 per barrel.
The U.K. will be banning oil imports from Russia, however, it will continue to allow the import of its natural gas and coal. Whereas the U.S. is taking it a step further, prohibiting the import of all Russian fossil fuels, including oil and gas. President Joe Biden declared that the United States “will not be part of subsidizing Putin’s war”.
