Petrol price reaching R40 a litre is not reality
Over the weekend, emeritus professor of international law at Unisa, André Thomashausen, claimed that petrol prices could reach up to R40 a litre as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.
However, Econometric chief economist, Azar Jammine argued against this claim. For this jaw-dropping price to happen, oil would have to become $400 a barrel and when looking at current trends and projections, economists predict that petrol prices could reach R24 a litre in the near term.
Anything beyond that will be “pure speculation” as that is not what the data shows.
National water infrastructer agency to be established
The National Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu has revealed plans to establish a national water infrastructure agency since 40% of South Africa’s water is lost due to leaks, non-payment and other factors.
The agency will aim to refurbish and expand SA’s critical water infrastructure. And according to Mchunu, it would “cost a fortune” to source new water and still protect existing resources.
Furthermore, the agency will be built around the state-owned Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority. From there it will hopefully attract new investment by packaging various water infrastructure projects.

Last week South Africa was one of the 35 countries that abstained from voting in the United Nations resolution on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Following this, president Ramaphosa released a letter to the public explaining why South Africa withheld from voting and what his stance is on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
President Ramaphosa’s main cause for concern with the UN resolution on Russia’s invasion is the lack of emphasis on the need for peaceful communication between the warring parties. Ramaphosa states, “the resolution did not foreground the call for meaningful engagement”. But instead, added it in “a single sentence close to the conclusion of the final text.”
