Ramaphosa critiques Biden’s pre-war Russia diplomacy
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently expressed that if US President Joe Biden had agreed to meet with Russia’s Vladimir Putin unconditionally days before the invasion, it could have been averted.
United State deputy secretary of state, Brian McKeon, responded to this and stated that the department “left no diplomatic stone unturned” in the Russian-Ukraine confrontation.
McKeon added that the fact that South Africa abstained from voting at the UN General Assembly was not seen that SA was endorsing the invasion. And he also added that the abstention would not impact US relations with South Africa.
Universities vaccine mandates to be taken to court
The Universities Alliance South Africa is an organisation that represents students and staff across the country. And the organisation is currently preparing a legal case against several public universities over their mandatory vaccine policies.
These policies require all staff and students to be fully vaccinated to access campuses and facilities. And it is expected that all unvaccinated individuals produce a weekly negative Covid-19 test.
The alliance is thus arguing that this violates an individual’s right to bodily autonomy and has described the policy as “irrational, medically unjustified and unlawful”.
What does eased Covid-19 restrictions mean for the tourism industry?
The Tourism Business Council of South Africa expressed that it is happy to hear that the government is planning to ease Covid-10 restrictions. However, it pointed out that the PCR test requirements for vaccinated travellers also needs to be scrapped if South Africa were to remain competitive in the tourism market.
These concerns were raised after the Health Ministry announced that it was planning on ending the national state of disaster. And according to the chief executive officer of the Tourism Business Council, the mandatory negative PCR test for incoming travellers was the biggest threat to the country’s tourism.
