Ramaphosa to patch up relations with Russia
South Africa’s government is currently attempting to patch up relations with Russia after the minister of international relations and cooperation Naledi Pandor called for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine.
After Pandor issued a “surprisingly strong endorsement” of Ukraine’s sovereignty last week, President Ramaphosa was reportedly caught off guard. He feels that this statement contradicted South Africa’s official stance – which is to remain neutral and call for mediation.
And thus far, other members of the BRICS bloc – which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – has refrained from criticising Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Taxing the wealthy
According to SARS commissioner, Edward Kieswetter, the idea behind the new unit of the super-wealthy is not to “go after” wealthy taxpayers. Instead, it was established to provide clarity on the tax obligations this demographic has, to ease compliance, and to make their tax affairs easier with minimal fuss.
Kieswetter further explained that SARS is focused on assessing the nature of income within this specific demographic as well as any onshore/offshore financial arrangements. And finally, it is also focused on the legal structures of ownership that their wealth is tied up in.
The unit is meant to make the lives of “honest taxpayers” that much easier.
South African doctors calls for law reform
For fear of a harsh penalty in the case that their patients die, the South African Medico-Legal Association is urging the government to review the law surrounding culpable homicide and its application in healthcare settings.
The association argued that the current law has “a low threshold of criminal culpability”.
Thus, even if a healthcare practitioner acts in good faith or the error of judgement is slight, it can be easy for the prosecution to formulate charges against the practitioner and secure a criminal conviction.
