Ayanda Dlodlo takes no responsibility for the July 2021 riots
Whilst testifying before the SA Human Rights Commission this week, former state security minister Ayanda Dlodlo stated that she was not responsible for the intelligence failures during the July 2021 riots.
Dlodlo claimed that it wasn’t her responsibility that other departments failed to deliver intelligence reports to the ministers or officials in charge. She also added that she did not have the authority to “declassify” information.
Dlodlo and police minister Bheki Cele were both implicated in the failures that enabled rioters and looters to rampage through KZN and Gauteng. And so far, no officials have owned up to the failures and no one has been held accountable.
The NLTA calls for sin taxes to stay unchanged
Ahead of today’s budget speech – taking place at 14:00 – the National Liquor Traders Association (NLTA) requested that the government keep sin taxes unchanged. The NLTA represents nearly 300 000 workers and feels that the sin taxes should stay unchanged due to the months of losses during the hard lockdowns.
According to the NLTA, any increase of “excise duty” would mean that the illicit trade of alcohol – valued at R20 billion – would rise.
Govt can use the slate levy to smooth over March’s record-high petrol price
According to experts, the government could possibly make adjustments to soften the blow motorists will have to endure come March as petrol price increases are set to kick in.
Investec chief economist, Annabel Bishop, points out that the slate levy could be South Africa’s saving grace. The slate levy is typically used to smooth the fuel price over the course of a month.
