SONA 2022 – A mix of reactions
After President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address last night, there has been a mix of responses.
Some sectors in South Africa welcomed what was said while others shrugged off aspects of the speech. And while the pro-business stance of the address was welcomed, many remain unconvinced that Ramaphosa is set out to take the corruption in South Africa.
And from a political standpoint, it seems that many of the talking points were in line with DA police. However, it needed “effective execution”. And the EFF chose to rather insult the president’s “cheap suit”.
Covid Looting Payback
Companies and governing bodies that benefited from the Gauteng education decontamination contracts have been ordered to pay back the profits that were made.
In 2020, over R431 million was spent on decontamination, disinfection, deep cleaning and sanitising contracts for Gauteng schools. The Special Investigation Unit has filed an application to the Special Tribunal over the large amount of money.
The tribunal found in the order that proper processes were not followed and contacts were deemed unconstitutional. 73 companies were named in the order and have to pay back the profits on the contacts within 60 days.
Misconduct in the Council continues
The Legal Practice Council have said that it will probe advocate Dali Mpofu for misconduct. This comes after concerns were raised by the General Council of the Bar and the Black Lawyers Association about Mpofu’s behaviour during the Judicial Service Commission’s chief justice interviews.
During these interviews, Mpofu and EFF leader, Julius Malema, targeted Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo and made unsubstantiated allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
Mpofu argues that he did nothing wrong and claims that so-called “white media” and “white lawyers” were “driving a campaign against him”.
