SONA 2022 – South Africa waits in anticipation
President Cyril Ramaphosa will be delivering his latest State of the Nation Address (SONA) tonight at 19:00.
And as South Africans are waiting in anticipation while preparations are well underway, the same topics such as job creation, investment and reviving the economy are to be expected. But the President is also expected to focus on South Africa’s emergence from the pandemic, the basic income grant, and the developments in the country. These developments include the energy department’s progress in alternative electricity sources.
Finally, citizens are also expecting Ramaphosa to discuss the widespread corruption that was uncovered in the state capture reports.
The City of Tshwane cuts off Electricity and Water for major non payers
The City of Tshwane isn’t playing around anymore and has officially embarked on their “aggressive revenue collecting campaign”. This means that they are cutting off defaulting businesses and buildings that have not paid their bills.
According to the Executive mayor, Randall Williams, only 56% of the city’s customers actually pay their accounts monthly. This means that there is currently over R17 billion worth of debt thanks to unpaid bills.
Many of the buildings that were cut off on Wednesday included government departments and private businesses. It is said that the campaign will nest make its way into estates, complexes and other residential areas.
And one of the hardest hits during this campaign is the Sheraton Hotel which reportedly owes the Tshwane municipalities R23 million.
Have you been ignoring your SABC TV Licence payments?
The TV licence evasion rate currently stands at 82.1% which could mean that the SABC could provide citizens with amnesty. A clean slate could also improve collections as citizens do not have to worry about making back payments. Amnesty could also ease the SABC’s move to a new collection model which aims to focus on a general levy rather than individual licences. However, the new model would mean that citizens need to pay a levy for any smart device that can access the SABC channels, irregardless of whether you choose to watch them or not.
