Tiger brands has recalled Purity Essentials Baby Powder products as a precautionary measure after finding traces of asbestos in test samples from a batch of pharmaceutical-grade talc powder used as raw material in the production of finished powder products.
“The batch of raw material with the detected trace levels of asbestos does not meet the company’s strict quality and safety standards,” Tiger Brands said in a statement.
“In the best interest of consumers and as a precautionary measure, the company made the decision to initiate a product recall of the affected products after consultation with the National Consumer Commission.”
It added that it was working with its retail wholesale customers to remove all affected baby powder products from the store shelves.
Consumers who have Purity Essentials Baby Power 400g, 200g and 100g products have been asked to return them to the nearest supermarket, wholesale, or pharmacy outlets that stock the products, and exchange them for cash or coupon refund from 8 September 2022.

The company added that the recall does not affect Purity Essentials Cornstarch Powder or any other Baby Care products under the Purity brand.
