Three people were killed, and 17 others were injured after gunshots rang out in Chattanooga, Tennessee, early on Sunday, with some victims struck by bullets and others by fleeing vehicles, according to the US police.
Police responded to a report of a shooting at a nightclub just before 02:45am. Officers found multiple victims when they arrived and began rendering medical aid on them, said Jeremy Eames, a spokesperson for the Chattanooga Police Department.
Two of the victims died from gunshot wounds while a third died from injuries sustained after being hit by a car while trying to flee the scene where the shooting was taking place, on McCallie Avenue, Police Chief Celeste Murphy said in a news conference.
Two other people were also struck by car as they were also trying to flee the violent shootout, but they survived making it a total of 17 victims. Of the 17 victims at the deadly shooting incident, one was a minor aged 16, Murphey said.
Police believe there were multiple shooters involved using several types of firearms. No suspects have been arrested yet, and police are yet to identify any potential suspects or victims. The motive for the shooting is unknown, but the authorities believe the shooting is an isolated incident “in which one or more of the victims were targeted.”
