The Hawks have nabbed three more alleged instigators of the July 2021 unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and some parts of Gauteng. This brings the total number of suspects arrested over the past few days to 25.
Brigadier Thandi Mbambo, the Hawks spokesperson said the suspects, two of which were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and one in North West will be appearing in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 August 2022.
Last week law the swift arrest of 22 suspects who were charged with conspiracy to commit public violence, incitement to commit public violence and incitement to commit arson related to the violence and looting that took place in KwaZulu-Natal.
One of the suspects was released with a warning while the other 21 appeared in court and were released on R3000 bail each, subject to various conditions including that they do not post any information with regards to the case on social media. The case was postponed to later this month.
The Hawks said they expect to make more arrests over the coming weeks in relation to the July 2021 unrests. One person the Hawks are investigating is former president Jacob Zuma’s daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla for her role in the chaos.
Zuma Sambudla allegedly posted a series of tweets which are deemed inflammatory during the unrest. She took to Twitter to thank those who were protesting in support of her father.
Jacob Zuma was arrested for being in contempt of court after he refused to comply with the order handed down by the Constitutional Court to go and appear before the State Capture Commission of inquiry.
More than 350 people were killed in just over a week of violence last year, with billions of rands worth of goods lost in looting.
