On Tuesday, 8 February, a fire raged between Ceres and the Tankwa-Karoo. Forcing the closure of Theron’s Pass along the R46. By this morning, fire crews had already partially contained the fire and have since reopened Theron’s Pass. Although firefighters have remained on-site to maintain control over the remaining flames along the cliff face.
Firefighters Response
Yesterday fire services from Ceres and Stellenbosch fought against a blaze that burnt out of control along Theron’s Pass. However, according to the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services, the affected area consisted mostly of agricultural land and natural terrain. So fire crews were mainly focused on protecting structures in the area, such as electricity pylons, cell towers.
On Tuesday, municipality spokesperson Jo-Ann Otto, commented, “Fire Services have deployed aerial support and ground teams to assist the fire teams. The fire continues to burn out of control, fuelled by a combination of a stiff breeze and dry vegetation”. A total of 48 firefighters with six vehicles aided by air resources fought the blaze. Although air assistance had to stand down overnight. Thanks to their efforts, by this morning, the fire had been brought under control. Allowing for the reopening of Theron’s Pass.
It’s Fire Season
The Western Cape is in the midst of the hottest, dryest and windiest months that make up fire season. And fire crews have already fought almost 80 fires this season so far. Including the one over Ou Kaapse Weg which was brought under control in record time. But considering the current average of between 17 000 and 20 000, Western Cape firefighters may have many more to come. However, with the vigilance and support of the public, we may be able to bring the number of out-of-control fires down.
