A teacher assistant, 24, was arrested last week after allegedly gang-raping a 17-year-old student at the iHlumelo Secondary School in Mbekweni, Paarl.
The teacher assistant took advantage of the student whilst at school
The incident happened on the 30th of October 2021, however, police says that charges only came to light recently. And according to the student, the incident happened during an extra mathematics class at the school.
According to the police report, the student went to the bathroom when the teacher assistant followed and grabbed her. His “friend” then joined them in the bathroom and when the assistant teacher was done, he “handed her over” to “his friend” who also raped her.
The teacher and his “friend” then threatened the student and told her not to tell anyone about what happened.
“A rape case docket was registered on Monday, January 23. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units (FCS) are still investigating this matter,” said Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk.
The Paarl school has not yet released a comment on the matter.
The assistant teacher made his first appearance at Paarl Magistrate Court on January 27. However, it is not yet confirmed whether the second suspect is arrested.
