Footage taken by the victim was quickly spread on social media immediately sparking outrage and protest at the University.
The university is appalled by the behaviour of this white student
“The university strongly condemns the destructive, hurtful and racist incident that was captured on a cellphone video in the Huis Marais residence on the Stellenbosch University campus in the early hours of Sunday morning,” spokesperson Martin Viljoen confirmed.
Prof Wim de Villiers said: “We are appalled by this type of behaviour. Such conduct will not be tolerated at the university. We acted swiftly and decisively to uphold our commitment to a culture of inclusivity. What happened at Huis Marais is not acceptable. No student has the right to diminish another student’s human dignity or rights in this way.”
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday. The black student was sleeping at Huis Marais residence and at around 4am, a white student walked into his room and began urinating on the first-year student’s laptop and books which were on his desk. The video was circulated and the was outrage and a protest was sparked.

In the video, the black student can be heard asking the student who walked into the room and began peeing on his possessions “why are you peeing by my room?”
The perpetrator responded saying “huh”, while the victim repeated the question while he was in shock. Still urinating, the culprit replied: “I’m waiting for someone.” Sasco said the culprit said this is what they do to black boys.
