Award-winning actor and filmmaker Sean Penn is currently in Ukraine, filming a documentary about Russia’s attacks – all while putting his own life directly in danger.
On Thursday, Penn was seen at a government press coreference in Kyiv and met with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zenenskyy.
Sean Penn shows courage that many “Western politicians lack”
The Ukrainian presidential office released a statement regarding Penn’s presence in the country:
“The director came to Kyiv specifically to record all the events taking place in Ukraine and as a documentary filmmaker to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country,” the Ukrainian presidential office’s Facebook page posted on Thursday.
“Today, Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine while being in Ukraine. Our country is grateful to him for such a display of courage and honesty,” said the post.
“Penn demonstrates the kind of courage that many others, including Western politicians, lack”.

Penn originally started preparing for a Ukrainian documentary in November when he visited the country. There, he met with military staff, spoke with journalists and soldiers and “saw how we defend our country” – according to the president’s office.

Russian forces takes over in Ukraine
The actor’s recent visit comes just as Russia keeps raining missiles and shells down on multiple Ukrainian cities and battles on the outskirts of Kyiv.
Sean Penn is known for his outspoken activism in political matters and has even won a few awards for his projects. And on Friday, he released his own statement regarding the ongoing tragedy:
“Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn’t relent, I believe Mr Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind. President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people have risen as historic symbols of courage and principle. Ukraine is the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams. If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost. “
