The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has shared that it has measures in place that will assist the flood victims in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Cash benefits will be increased and food vouchers, school uniforms and blankets can also be provided.
As part of the government’s social relief intervention, SASSA has increased grants for those in need. The agency further explained that the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants are meant to “provide temporary assistance” to victims of a crisis or disaster.
Here’s what you need to know about the SRD Disaster Grant
Only those that are directly affected by a crisis or disaster and are unable to meet their families’ most basic needs can apply for the SRD grant.
In order to apply, applicants need to submit their contact details to the nearest ward councillor at a municipality. Or applicants can submit their details to a social worker.
When approved for the grant, SASSA may provide the following:
- Food vouchers of R1200 per family
- R3960 (R1980 to be paid double) as food vouchers or cash to those who lost family in the disaster
- School uniforms to girls (R2700) and boys (R2500)
All applicants should note that the SRD Disaster Grant is only given for one month.
