The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has released the social grants payment dates for January to March 2023.
SASSA is responsible for distributing grants and allowances to disadvantaged people who require financial assistance, within the country.
SASSA beneficiaries can receive their payments from selected supermarkets, such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, Usave Merchants, Checkers and Shoprite, and obtain this through their SASSA card, CashSend, or by getting the amount directly transferred into their bank account.
As previously reported, earlier this year SASSA said it heard beneficiaries’ complaints about the previous payment schedule and decided to make a change.
SASSA said if the second day of the month falls on a weekend or public holiday, the payment will take place on the following work day. Older persons and the associated are paid first followed by disability grants and child grants.
If you are a SASSA beneficiary or know someone who is, you may be wondering when the relevant grant payments will be made. Below is a list of the SASSA payment schedule for the months of January, February and March:
Payments for January 2023
- Older Persons/ Pensioners Grant: Tuesday, 3 January 2023
- Disability Grant: Wednesday, 4 January 2023

Meanwhile, Postbank has advised all SASSA beneficiaries that ATM withdrawals using the gold cards have been suspended for December only.
This comes after a number of beneficiaries could not access their grants on the specified payment dates for both November and December.
In a statement, Postbank said it had been experiencing a number of technical glitches that disrupted the smooth withdrawals of social grants. It added that investigations found a series of network attacks by criminals determined to commit systematic card fraud related crimes on Postbank payments using sophisticated modus operandi.
