Sandton City reopened for business on Thursday, hours after a woman had jumped to her death inside the shopping mall.

Distress calls rang out from the premium shopping centre on Wednesday evening, after eyewitnesses watched in horror as an unidentified woman took her own life by jumping from the top floor of of the multi-storey centre.
Emergency medical officials rushed to the scene to initiate resuscitation efforts but according to a statement released by the mall’s centre management, it was too late.
“Sandton City confirms that on 13 October 2021, at approximately 20:26 an individual jumped to their death. Emergency services responded to the scene immediately, but the individual has unfortunately been pronounced dead.
“The South African Police Service arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, with an investigation now underway. Sandton City Management sends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement read.

Details around the motive behind the woman’s actions are still unknown, at this stage. While information continues to trickle in, we now know that the victim was a 19-year-old matriculant.
Also, eyewitnesses who encountered the woman moments before her fatal fall claim she appeared distressed.

Police have yet to issue a statement with more details on the incident.
