Rand water in the city of Johannesburg and the city of Tshwane have issued an alert, warning residents of a 53-hour water outage starting on Thursday afternoon, due to planned maintenance.
Several neighbourhoods will be without water from 5pm on Thursday, 11 August 2022, to 10pm on Saturday, 13 August. The outage is to complete a tie-in of a newly installed S4 pipeline into the existing S4 pipeline. The new portion or the pipeline expected to be tied in runs from Van Dyk to Rynfield.
These are the municipalities that will be affected:
- Ekurhuleni Metropolitan
- Tshwane Metropolitan
- Thembisile Hani Local Municipality
- Victor Khanye Local Municipality
- Govan Mbeki Local Municipality
- Lesedi Local Municipality
Rand Water said the maintenance will affect many areas in the East Rand and the north-eastern suburbs of Tshwane.

“Residents are urged to use water sparingly during this time to prevent reservoirs from running dry. Please store sufficient water to sustain you for the duration of the shutdown, water tankers will be on standby as an alternative supply,” it said.
Meanwhile the city of Tshwane added: “The city of Tshwane sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may occur as a result of the above-mentioned repairs. We appeal to all residents to use water sparingly during this time. Water tankers will be on standby for alternative water supply.”
