From Queen Elizabeth’s footman to Prince Charles’s valet to the chief executive of the Prince’s Foundation, Michael Fawcett has officially resigned after 40 years of service to the Royal Family.
After stepping down temporarily as head of Prince Charles’s charitable foundation, Michael Fawcett has permanently resigned from his position on Friday. His resignation comes amid an internal investigation into an alleged cash-for-honours scandal.
Prince Charles allegedly know nothing and supports the investigation
In September, Fawcett voluntarily stepped down from his post as accusations arose that he used his position and influence regarding cash-for-honours. It was said that he helped secure an honorary title and British citizenship for a Saudi businessman – Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz – in exchange for donations.
It is said that Mahfouz especially donated large sums of money to restoration projects that were of particular interest to Prince Charles.
A letter to Mahfouz that was written by Fawcett in August 2018 came to light during the whole scandal, which reportedly stated, “In light of the ongoing and most recent generosity of His Excellency … I am happy to confirm to you, in confidence, that we are willing and happy to support and contribute to the application for Citizenship.”
An inquiry into the claims was launched by the Prince’s Foundation, and Prince Charles denies any knowledge of the alleged offer of honours in return for donations. The Prince is apparently in full support of the ongoing investigation.
