The African National Congress (ANC)’s four-day elective conference in Gauteng has officially elected its new leadership, with Panyaza Lisufi elected as the new ANC chairperson in the province. Lisufi defeated human settlements MEC Lebogang Maile by a slim margin in the highly contested provincial conference.
Maile congratulated Lisufi on his victory, tweeting: “All the best my brother. You ran a clean campaign benefitting a leader of our movement. We’ll all rally behind the elected leadership as we work towards ANC victory in 2024.”
Lisufi responded: “We are together forever, my Cde Lebogang Maile. Let’s carry this task together.”
Lisufi beat his rival with 32 votes as he received 575 of the votes while Maile managed to get 543 of the votes. The hotly contested conference was attended by 1,117 delegates from five regions in the province.
Despite the fact that Maile lost, his ally TK Nciza was elected at the provincial secretary, and Tasneem Motara who also belongs to Maile’s slate was elected as the new deputy provincial secretary.
There was victory also on Lisufi’s slate as Morakane Mosupyoe was elected as the ANC Gauteng provincial treasurer. She defeated Paul Mojapelo by one vote. Lisufi’s slate took three of the top positions while Maile’s slate won two of the positions.
