Yesterday’s Valentine’s Day was not a happy celebration of love for everyone as Reeva Steenkamp’s parents still mourn the death of their beloved daughter, nine years after she was shot by Oscar Pistorius.
Preparations for the face-to-face meeting are still underway
The latest that was said regarding Pistorius, is that he was up for parole but needed to complete the victim-offender dialogue first. And in November, he was moved to a prison in Gqeberha so that he is closer to the Steenkamps.
However, on Monday, the correctional services department said that Pistorius still remains in the Eastern Cape facility for now as he is still waiting to meet with Barry and June Steenkamp.
“We are still busy with preparations, as there are a number of processes involved before the inmate and victims can directly engage,” said the department of correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
The Steenkamps believe Oscar Pistorius only show remorse to get out of jail
In December 2021, the Steenkamps sat down for an interview and revealed that they “just want the truth”. It seems that the letter they received from Oscar Pistorius requesting a meeting was the first form of communication from his side and the letter was like ripping a band-aid off.
Barry and June don’t feel that he shows any true remorse for what he has done and June added that she feels he only show remorse to get out of jail.
“I think he will only show remorse if it contributes to his getting out of jail. We don’t have the full story. He changed his mind three times under oath”, she said.
