The police station at Kwaggafontein, between KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga and Groblersdal in Limpopo, was robbed at about 10pm. Ian Cameron from Action Society said the details around the incident are still sketchy.
“An unknown number of suspects attacked Kwaggafontein police station late last night. The night shift officers were held captive and the station was robbed,” said Cameron
A police source around the area said the suspects stole firearms from the station. “Four R5 assault rifles, three pump-action shotguns and three 9mm pistols with 83 rounds were stolen, but no officers were harmed.”
Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, the Mpumalanga Police commissioner has ordered mobilisation of maximum resources to arrest the suspects responsible for the robbery at the Kwaggafontein police station.
In a statement on Thursday, Manamela assured the public that the police are working around the clock to apprehend the armed suspects.
“Currently, the investigation is still ongoing, and members of the media will be updated on the developments thereof,” said Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the police spokesperson.
Mohlala said they cannot provide any further details as the investigations continue. However, there are reports that there were six robbers involved who stole guns and four cellphones.
