A gang-related altercation at a school in Mpumalanga resulted in the death of a grade 10 pupil after he was stabbed on the school ground on Tuesday.
The Cebisa Secondary School pupil was allegedly stabbed to death another school pupil on the school grounds. It is alleged that the two learners belong to rival gangs.
“Regrettably, the stabbed learner succumbed to his injuries at Ermelo public hospital. It is alleged that the learners belonged to different troublesome gangsters in the township,” the Mpumalanga education department said in a statement.
Bonakele Majuba, the MEC for Education in Mpumalanga is expected to visit Cebisa Secondary School in Ermelo on Thursday.
While Majuba conveyed his message of condolences to the family of the deceased, he also condemned the incident and instructed the department to work closely with the law enforcement agencies to probe the circumstances that led to the violent incident.
The department’s communication officer, Gerald Sambo, said the MEC together with Mpumalanga education officials will travel to the school to provide all those who are directly or indirectly affected by the incident with psychosocial assistance.
Sambo said they are saddened by the killing of the learner and are still shocked at how the incident took place.
He said more details about the incident could not be shared but a full statement would be released tomorrow as the MEC would be at the school to address the matter.
