Mpho Phalatse has lost the confidence of her own party. Following her removal, the ANC now stands a stronger chance of remaining in power once again.
140 councilors vote in favor of removing Mpho Phalatse
Her dismissal as Mayor of Johannesburg will be the third time a motion of no confidence was filed against the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg.
In September 2022, Phalatse was ousted as Mayor of Johannesburg. Following a motion of no confidence filed against her by three minority parties. These are the AIC, Al-Jama-ah, and the African Transformation Movement.
This motion was later removed by the three parties. As they revealed their decision to give the mayor another chance at leading the most powerful metro in the country.
Mpho Phalatse was ultimately reinstated by the South Gauteng High Court. After it was found that her removal was unlawful, unconstitutional, and invalid.
Of the previous dismissals, Mpho Phalatse revealed that the plot to remove her as Mayor of Johannesburg is a tactic used to bring instability to the metro.
ActionSA makes a statement
The Citizen currently reports that 140 councilors voted in favor of removing Mpho Phalatse as mayor. While 129 voted in opposition to this decision.
According to ActionSA, Mpho would have been able to hold her position. That is if the DA and the Patriotic Alliance did not have a fallout over power sharing.
Had the DA accepted the power-sharing deal with the Patriotic Alliance, they would’ve restored the majority of the coalition in Johannesburg. They would have simultaneously defeated the motions of no confidence against Phalatse.
Taking to social media, ActionSA penned a heartfelt message to Phalatse.
“Thank you Mpho Phalatse for your service to Joburg residents & for supporting our MMCs, enabling them to perform their duties at their very best.”
They continued, “Your govt saw an end to years of plundering by the ANC & laid the foundation for the Rule of Law, social justice, and ethical leadership.”
A new mayor is yet to be elected at this time. This is a developing story.
