Snow has fallen in parts of Lesotho and the Eastern Cape. The SA Weather Service said snow is now evident in parts of Lesotho as well as the southern Drakensberg or the north-eastern high ground of the Eastern Cape.
Although the measurement of snow could not be confirmed on Sunday, weather forecaster Lelo Kleinbooi that the office expected flakes to be around 1cm over high-lying areas or mountain peaks and up to 6 to 8cm over the southern Drakensberg.
Kleinbooi said there are prospects of more snow coming this week over the Southern Drakensburg. “It is still far out, and the forecast will likely change as we get close to the time in question. On Friday, the SA Weather Service issued a yellow alert level 1 warning for disruptive snow in southern Drakensberg from Saturday night into Sunday.
Saws warned residents in parts of Eastern Cape to expect isolated showers and thunderstorms from Tuesday afternoon. The warning comes as Vredendal in the Western Cape battles high fire danger conditions.
“Conditions are such that the FDI index is above 75. Under these conditions, fires may develop and spread rapidly, resulting in damage to property and possible loss of human and/or animal life,” warned the weather service on Monday.
There will be morning frost in places over the interior, otherwise fine and cool, but warm over the west coast interior of the Western Cape.
