Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for six suspects who were involved in a botched cash-in-transit robbery at the Olievenhoutbosch Shopping Complex on Thursday. An armed suspect was shot dead during the robbery. The police said.
Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the police spokesperson said the CIT security guards were collecting cash from a store when the suspects stormed in. He said at least seven heavily armed suspects were seen at the scene.
The suspects attempted to rob cash-in-transit guards of their firearms. The security guards were ambushed while they were entering the store to deliver coins and robbed them at gunpoint. During the incident, one of the suspects was shot dead by the store security guard while the other suspects escaped from the scene.
Netshiunda said one stolen firearm from the security guards was recovered and the suspects failed to get away with the bag of money. He asked that anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10111.
“Police in Gauteng are searching for at least six suspects who allegedly robbed cash delivery security guards of their firearms during an armed robbery at a store at Olivenhoutbosch shopping complex on Thursday morning,” said Netshiunda.
Emer-G-Med paramedics said they responded to the scene and declared that one person died on the scene. A security guard sustained a gunshot wound and was treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
