The police in Waterval, outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo, have opened an inquest into the death of a man who collapsed after drinking a full bottle of Jägermeister in a competition to win R200.
The incident happened at a tavern called Blue Corner Car Wash & Liquor Restaurant in Ha-Mashamba Village near Elim in Limpopo. The man aged between 25 and 30 died after he drank the entire bottle of Jägermeister.
According to police, several patrons competed to see who could drink an entire bottle of Jägermeister. There was a prize for the person who could finish the entire bottle.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the police spokesperson says a person who could finish the bottle was set to walk away with R200. “One of them immediately collapsed thereafter was taken to the local clinic where he was certified dead. Police investigations are continuing,” says Mojapelo.
The incident allegedly happened on Sunday 10 July 2022 at about 23h30, said Mojapelo.
This comes as more than 22 people were shot and killed over the weekend in three separate taverns across the country over the past weekend. In Gauteng unknown armed suspects stormed into the Mdlalose tavern in Orlando East, Soweto and opened fire, killing 16 people. There was 15 people killed but another victim has now been confirmed dead.
In a separate incident, in a tavern in Katlehong, suspects opened fire on patrons killing two people and leaving four others injured.
The third incident occurred in Pietermaritzburg, four people died and eight others were injured following a shooting in a tavern.
