South Africans gave a sigh of relief as Eskom announced last night that load shedding was completely suspended for now. This after preparing for power cuts to hit until Monday morning.
According to the power supplier, the few days of load shedding was enough for Eskom to repair the emergency generation reserves. And since Saturday morning, Eskom’s teams have returned nine generating units to service. This of course helped a big deal when it comes to easing the capacity constraints.
“The period of load shedding assisted us in replenishing the emergency generation reserves in anticipation of the week ahead.”
Originally, power cuts were said to be implemented from Wednesday to Monday and the whole of South Africa was set to undergo Stage 2.
“This load shedding is necessary due to a shortage of generation capacity following breakdowns of two more generating units during the night,“ Eskom said in a statement on Wednesday.
And even though no power cuts are scheduled, for now, the power station still urges all South Africans to be mindful of the usage of electricity. Eskom recommends citizens to not leave any appliances running when not necessary and the same with lights – always switch them off when you’re not in the room.
