After a week of blackouts, Eskom announced on Sunday that load shedding will be suspended until further notice. And while South Africans rejoice in the news, the power utility snuck in a notice regarding constrainment on the system.
Eskom is not all cleared yet
According to Eskom spokesperson, Sikonathi Mantshantsha, four generation units have returned to service since Friday. And total breakdwons have been reduced to 12 422 MW while planned maintenance is 6 540 MW of capacity.
“The emergency generation reserves have also sufficiently recovered. Eight other generating units are expected to return to service by Wednesday evening.”
However, Mantshantsha added that South Africa is not yet out of the woods as Eskom warns that the system can be expected to remain constrained for the next two days.
“The system will remain constrained on Monday and Tuesday and it is expected that extensive use of emergency reserves will be required ahead of the units returning.”
And so, Eskom still urges all citizens to continue to be aware of the amount of electiricy that is used and to save where possible.
