After an altercation between Len Cloete and police officers took place in Muldersdrift last year November, the situation became dire when Cloete was shot in the head. And while investigations are still ongoing, Cloete has awoken from his coma.
Len Cloete is making rapid progress
The bullet was lodged in Cloete’s head and caused him to go into a comatic state. However, according to specialised security service investigator, Mike Bolhuis, the bullet was removed and Cloete is now awake.
Once awake, Cloete was moved to a rehabilitation unit in Krugersdorp and was reportedly making “rapid progress”.
“He can move and feel on both sides of his body. He moves his eyes, he recognises his wife and kisses her,” Bolhuis said.
“He uses his eyes to communicate.”
Len Cloete has not yet given a statement on the Muldersdrift incident
Even though Cloete is doing better, he still has a long way to go. Thus, authorities will have to wait until he is fully aware before he is able to give a statement on what happened that evening.
Bolhuis added that there is not yet any indication of when Cloete will be fit enough to be questioned.
“Unless the doctors at a stage say that he is ready for an interview, he will not be questioned,” Bolhuis said.
“Otherwise the case can be tainted and thrown out of court.”
All investigations are reportedly complete and they are only waiting to hear Cloete’s side of the story.
Investigations on police are still ongoing
According to the independent police investigative directorate (IPID), investigations on whether police were in the wrong during the altercation, was still ongoing.
The spokesperson for the IPID said that they would wait on doctors to give the go-ahead on when a statement can be recorded from Cloete.
“The process that will follow after Cloete’s recovery will be collecting his statement and taking the matter for national prosecuting authority to decide,” Langa said.
