A farmer was shot and killed while another was seriously wounded after they were shot by unknown men whilst they were at a tuckshop on R103 Road outside Ladysmith on Wednesday night.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal police, the incident took place at 11:30pm in Ladysmith and the police were called in and alerted about the shooting.
KNZ Provincial spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said when the police arrived at the scene, they were shown the body of 38-year-old Sibusiso Gama, with multiple gunshot wounds.
Ngcobo said the other man, 57-year-old Gerry Khumalo was rushed to hospital to receive medical attention after he also suffered gunshot wounds. She said cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated by Ladysmith police.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) uThukela constituency head Alf Lees condemned the murder and attack on the prominent farmers from Ladysmith.
“Both farmers were shot multiple times while at the Tuck Shop outside Ladysmith last night (Wednesday),” Lees said.
“The victims of this shooting, Gerry Khumalo, who is injured and in hospital, and Sibusiso Gama, who was killed, are successful commercial farmers in the Ladysmith area,” he said.
The DA extended its condolences to the families of the deceased. “We call on the police to make every possible effort to identify the perpetrators of this of this gruesome crime as well as the motive for it. The perpetrators must face the harshest possible consequences for their actions,” Lees said.
