ANC NEC member Mmamoloko Kubayi will be contesting for the position of deputy president in the upcoming elections.
The human settlement minister believes that this year should be the years where we see 50% of women representation in the ANC top six.
Kubayi was speaking on Saturday during women’s month commemoration event on Saturday where her branch, Moloto Tambane in ward 14 endorsed her for the second most powerful position in her party.
Following her keynote of address during the event, she hinted she would make herself available to contest when the time is right. Kubayi confirmed that her branch informed her that they want her to serve as the deputy president.
“They did inform me that they have had a BEC meeting, and they would want to start engaging other branches and obviously because I have been approached by many people and I have sent them to my branch secretary to talk to my zone.”
Her supporters on Saturday strongly believed her hometown ANC branch in Protea South, Soweto would be the right platform her campaign for ANC deputy president.
The event was dubbed women’s month commemoration; however, it was used to endorsement as deputy president of the ANC when the party heads to the December elective conference.
“My response is that those who are supporting me need to make sure that I get nominated so that when I make myself available and I don’t meet the threshold, it’s immaterial. You need 4000 branches and provinces to support you, that’s critical.”
Pinky Numa, the ANC Johannesburg young women’s desk leader announced Kubayi’s endorsement saying the ANC had no gender mix in the top mix. She said Kubayi meets the characteristics needed by the ANC.
Numa said: “Even though they say that the top six sits and discusses and recommends to the NWC, but they sit alone as men making decisions that impact us as women.
“That is why we are saying unashamedly, comrade go and represent us in that top six. Comrade, if it is capacity they are looking for, then surely, they cannot fault you on that,” she added.
The leader of the Moloto Tambane ANC branch said Kubayi was more than capable to ensure that the party reaches its objective of economic transformation.
