More than 80 suspects, who were arrested over the weekend after the alleged rape of eight women at West Village in Krugersdorp, West Rand, are expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court on Monday morning.
The police said some of the suspects may be linked to the rape incident which took place hear a mine dump on Thursday. The women were part of a production crew shooting a music video. The armed suspects stormed the crew robbed their belongings before they raped the women.
A number of suspects were arrested in an anti-crime blitz on Friday, many of them on allegations of illegal mining, possession of explosives, stolen goods, illegal firearms and ammunition, as well as contravention of the Immigration Act.
Brenda Muridili, the police spokesperson said the suspects are set to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges related to the Immigration Act.
“Those arrested on the 29th of July will be appearing in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, for contravention of the Immigration Act.”
Muridili said none of the suspects have been linked to the rape incident yet. “No one has been linked to the incident yet and yesterday’s operation ended yesterday. The district and stations are continuing with their day-to-day operations and today 17 people have been arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act. Arrests of undocumented persons in the whole West Rand is a daily occurrence.”
