On Wednesday, the van Wyk family confirmed that the DNA testing proved that the human remains found in Daniel Smit‘s sewerage pipes in Klawer are of the 13-year-old.
“The results are a positive match. We are trying to cope, but it’s very heartsore”, said Matilda Bains, the van Wyk family spokesperson.
SAPS have not commented on the DNA results
The founder of Ubuntu Rural Women and Youth Movement, Wendy Parkeur, has been assisting the family and said that the family found out about the DNA results on Wednesday afternoon.
Billy Claasen, executive director of the Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation, also commented on the case.
“This is a really sad story, but we are pleased that the mother and immediate family can get closure now. From here on we will proceed with assistance to the family and the funeral or cremation if needs be.”
There has yet to be any comment from the police, however. And police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said: “The matter you are referring to is currently running in court, the investigation is in a very sensitive stage and this office cannot elaborate further on this matter.”
