Convicted murderer Sandile Kagiso Mantsoe appeared in the Evander Regional Court in Mpumalanga to faces charges of fraud.
The 33-year-old is currently serving 35 years in jail for the murder of his then on and off girlfriend Karabo Mokoena. His jail sentenced commenced in 2018.
The case is related to the Trillion Dollar Legacy Investment scheme, of which he is listed as the sole owner of the company.
Captain Dideo Lucy Sekgotodi, the Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson confirmed the latest charges against Mantsoe relate to allegations he defrauded would-be investors in 2016.
“It is alleged that during December 2016, the accused visited many government offices including Department of Justice, Municipality offices, and Department of Education whereby he recruited about 180 investors to invest over R2 million for a higher return on investment.”
In a statement, Sekgodi said it was further alleged that Mantsoe did not pay his clients as promised which led to one of the victims reporting the matter at Evander police station in December 2016.
“The case was referred to the Hawks for further probe. After the case was finalised, it was presented before the Evander Regional Court where a subpoena was issued for him to appear before court on 22 August 2022, hence his appearance.”
The case was postponed to 27 September for further investigation. Mantsoe remains behind bars.
Major General Zodwa Mokoena, the provincial head of the Hawks welcomed the arrest. She further warned the public to refrain from investing money with fraudsters. She asked all the victims of such crime to report the matter to the police.
