The council is set to meet today, 18 January, in order to elect chairpersons for the various committees. However, after the first council meeting descended into chaos last week, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has increased security due to possible protest marches.
JMPD warns that some streets in Braamfontein will be affected
According to the JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, Braamfontein will be affected from 07:00 to 18:00. The following streets will be affected due to possible protests and violent disruptions:
- Rissik Street
- Smit Street
- Civic Boulevard
- Hoofd Street
- Joubert Street
- De Korte Street
- Harrison Street
- Jorrisen Street
Police are on high alert for possible protests
Fihla further adds that police will do their best to divert traffic and protect the streets.
“Police will also be on high alert for any possible protest marches in the Johannesburg Inner City, Braamfontein, Hillbrow and around the Metro Centre vicinity.
JMPD condemns any violent behaviour and officers will deal firmly with anyone who attempts to thrash the City, or who intimidates other citizens.
We are appealing to road users to be patient and cooperative during this period,” says Fihla.
If possible, it is highly recommended to avoid these areas for the duration of Tuesday.
